The smartest thing I ever did was to go to Malta.

Malta...the Hollywood of the Mediterranean

What do actors like Madonna, Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt and Sharon Stone have in common? They all have sampled the excellent filming opportunities that Malta offers for any type of film production, this being a large budget film like Gladiator or a short 30 second commercial.

With its beautiful Mediterranean climate and deep blue sea, coupled with its megaliths, medieval dungeons, beautiful Baroque palaces, Renaissance cathedrals, fortifications and old Arab citadels, Malta definitely offers a unique filming set . The smallness of the island - an area of 316sq km and a coastline of 196.8km - makes the transfer from one location to the next effortless as nowhere in Malta is more than 1 hour's travel by car.

Today this small island is often referred to as the Hollywood of the Mediterranean, and this is confirmed by the long and impressive list of films that were either fully or partly filmed here, the most recent of which is Agora by Alejandro Amenábar.
